(i) Introduction

DPL celebrated 150th Birth Anniversary Celebration of Rabindranath Tagore from 19th October 2011 to 22nd October 2011 in the Central Library. During the four days of "Rabindra Utsav" various interactive cultural programmes were organized for school children as well as for general public.

During "Rabindro Utsav" exhibition of book, painting, postage stamps and long playing records on Rabindranath Tagore were displayed. Books written by Rabindranath Tagore on different subjects like literature (Poetry, Drama, Fiction), philosophy, education, women, religion, music, social reform etc. were exhibited. A separate section was devoted to the Tagore's literature translated into different languages like Hindi, Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, Punjabi etc. Postal stamps on Tagore released in India and abroad were displayed. The General Post Office (GPO), Parliament Street provided original stamps and first day cover on the occasion. Long Playing Records of Rabindra Sangeet and some rare books from the collection of DPL were some of the special attraction of the exhibition.

On 19.10.2011 Quiz contest (Prelims) on Rabindranath Tagore was held for the school children of junior and senior groups. Eight schools from Junior group and Ten schools from Senior Group participated in the competition. On the same day at 2.30 P.M. Essay competition in Hindi on Rabindranath Tagore for junior and senior groups was held. Thirty two candidates from Junior Group and Nineteen candidates from Senior Group participated in the competition. Rabindra Sangeet competition was organized on 20.10.2011, in which eighteen participants took part. On 21.10.2011 Nritya Natika competition was organized in which 2 schools / Group participated.

On the Samapan Utsav i.e. on 22.10.2011 Quiz competition (finals), Abriti recitation, Rabindra sangeet, comprehensive talk on Rabindranath Tagore and the shadow puppet show by renowned Amar Sabyasachi group were held. Shri Jawahar Sircar, Secretary, Ministry of Culture graced the occasion by his presence as Guest of Honour for the programme. Smt. Shailaja Chandra, Chairperson, DLB also enthusiastically visited the exhibition and attended the cultural programme to encourage the efforts of DPL. Cash Prizes, mementoes were distributed by the Director General, DPL to the winning school children and the public who actively participated during the four days of Rabindra Utsav.

Hon'ble Minister of State, Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Shri Sudip Bandopadhyay could not attend the function due to unavoidable urgent work.
